This second generation, Special Die Steel alloy (SDS II) was
developed specifically for ferrous hot mill work roll
applications. The unique properties of this alloy combine high
thermal fatigue strength and resistance to cracking at elevated
temperatures. The microstructure consists of a uniform
dispersion of alloy carbides in a fine grain tempered
martensitic matrix that manifests enhanced wear resistance. The
SDS II forged roll is capable of being produced at a higher
initial hardness to maximize wear resistance without a decrease
in thermal properties. The combined thermal and mechanical
(wear) properties of SDS II have proven benefits in hot roughing
mill work roll applications.
